todd snider - america's favorite pastime

On June 12, 1970, Dock Ellis of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitched a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres under the influence of LSD.

To quote dock:

"I was in Los Angeles, and the team was playing in San Diego , but I didn't know it. I had taken LSD..... I thought it was an off-day, that's how come I had it in me. I took the LSD at noon. At 1pm, his girlfriend and trip partner looked at the paper and said, "Dock, you're pitching today!"

"That's when it was $9.50 to fly to
San Diego. She got me to the airport at 3:30. I got there at 4:30, and the game started at 6:05pm
. It was a twi-night doubleheader. I can only remember bits and pieces of the game. I was psyched. I had a feeling of euphoria. I was zeroed in on the (catcher's) glove, but I didn't hit the glove too much. I remember hitting a couple of batters and the bases were loaded two or three times. The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn't. Sometimes I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. They say I had about three to four fielding chances. I remember diving out of the way of a ball I thought was a line drive. I jumped, but the ball wasn't hit hard and never reached me."

The Pirates won the game, 2-0, although Ellis walked eight batters. It was the highpoint in the baseball career of one of the finer pitchers of his time, and arguably, one of the greatest achievements in the history of sports.

One of my favorite singer/songwriters, Todd Snider has written a song about the event that can be found here:

unknown hinson - live at radio, radio - indianapolis - 03Jul08

As is perhaps appropriate for an act called Unknown Hinson ("Named after his father...on his birth certificate: Mama -- Miss Hinson, Daddy -- Unknown"), the press biography is pure fiction, while the press photo depicts a person who appears to be a cross between a 1950s country & western star and a vampire. Indeed, Hinson makes that combination explicit in "I Make Faces (When I Make Love)," pronouncing Dracula "Drackler," and singing, "Belly Lugosi and Boris and Lon/Made women scream when they come on/I tell you right where they went wrong/They couldn't sing a country western song." Unknown Hinson can, however, if in an exaggerated manner. In his fruity accent, "women" comes out "wuhmerns." But, of course, this is country comedy music, full of vulgar references to sexual relations (albeit without obscenities), as Hinson sings about inflatable dolls ("Polly Urethane"), "Lingerie," homosexuality ("Your Man..."), and sex-change operations ("Man to Man"). Now and then, he moves from twangy country to rock rhythms and screaming guitar solos, if only to send up rock culture ("Hippie Girl," "Rock 'n Roll Is Straight From Hell").

this recording caught unknown hinson live at radio, radio in indianapolis on 03jul08. some crowd noise is evident, but all-in-all a fine recording. as you can tell after listening, unknown is a true rocker. if you get the chance to see him live in your area don't miss it. he's a hoot!

walter egan - not shy - 1978

A year after recording his 1977 debut album Fundamental Roll, New York City native turned California rocker Walter Egan, found himself back in the studio once again joining forces with Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham (producer) and Stevie Nicks (background vocals). The winning combination of the Egan, Buckingham, and Nicks on Not Shy proved it's potency by giving Egan one of the biggest smash hits of 1978, "Magnet & Steel" which peaked at # 8 on the Billboard charts. Much like it's predecessor Fundamental Roll, Not Shy oozes sexy summertime California pop rock complete with an impeccable production and Egan's knack for writing catchy fun-loving romantic lyrics. Which again is best exemplified on "Magnet & Steel", a 50's doo-wop style ballad in which Egan's warm laid-back soulful voice melts with Buckingham and Nick's angelic background vocals. While the remaining nine tracks on Not Shy may not come close to the magic of "Magnet & Steel" most are as equally memorable. After listening to the record it's a mystery why such tracks as "Blonde in The Blue T-Bird" (featuring Dean Torrance of Jan & Dean fame on background vocals) and "Finally Find A Girlfriend" didn't give Egan any follow up hits. Stylistically Not Shy exhibits a bit of sleeker pop-rock approach than the more straight-up country rock of Fundamental Roll but at the same time still maintains a good dose of classic country rock twang. Like Fundamental Roll, Not Shy is a lost 70s treasure and is highly recommend listening for both fans of Fleetwood Mac and goodtime Southern California rock in general.

walter egan - fundamental roll - 1977

With an album cover that would make R. Kelly blush, (Egan appears on back cover getting frisky with a couple of high school cheerleaders) Fundamental Roll, the debut album from 70s one hit wonder Walter Egan proves that he was in fact much more than that. Initially Egan was interested in having Brian Wilson or Todd Rundgren produce his debut, but when neither became available his friend/engineer Duane Scott (who had worked with Egan on his previous band Wheels) suggested he get in touch with Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac. At the time Fleetwood Mac was riding their wave of success from the ‘White Album' and Lindsey was looking to cut his teeth in the studio as a producer. Buckingham enlisted fellow Fleetwood Mac member/ex-flame Stevie Nicks into the recording sessions to sing back up on six of the eleven tracks. The combination of Egan's warm soulful vocals coupled with Buckingham and Nicks gorgeous harmonies is undeniably great (the same formula would eventually give Egan his biggest success with 1978's "Magnet and Steel"). Dean Torrence of Jan and Dean fame also appears on backup vocals on the song "She's So Tough". But again its the chemistry between Walter, Lindsey, and Stevie that makes the record work and work well with such instantly catchy songs as the summertime pop of "Only The Lucky", the warm soft rock groove of "Won't You Say You Will", and the steamy "Yes I Guess I Am." Fundamental Roll is some of the best California Rock ever to be laid down on tape and is essential for fans of the Buckingham/Nicks version of Fleetwood Mac, who will feel right at home with Walter's perfect mesh of catchy pop rock, soothing soft rock, and infectious mid 70s country rock.

royal dixie jazz band - bourbon street in las vegas - 1977

in the heyday of dixieland music when the band played " oh, didn't he ramble" somebody had died.

at the royal casino lounge when the band plays the same tune, everybody comes alive. the tune, it's origins lost in dixieland tradition, gets a special treatment in this recording and is included in the album at the request of royal inn casino owner michael gaughan, who as much as any man is responsible for the success of the royal dixie jazz band.

now in it's third year at the royal inn, and with one successful record album behind it, charles "chuck" diamond's aggregation of talented musicians pulls out all the stops creating what can only be described as a perfect blending o the royal dixie jazz band's famous ensemble technique with specialties by it's individual musicians. the album you hold now belongs to you. it will bring a portion of an afternoon at the royal inn casino lounge into your home --- any time you want to play it. each member of the band with the exception of diamond is features on at least one song.
